Soggy nuggets ruin a party plate. The fix is heat, not time. An air fryer or oven at 200°C brings the crunch back in under ten minutes. A microwave never does.

The usual problem. They go in crisp and come out limp, so you blame the snacks. It is the microwave. It heats the water inside the food and turns it to steam, and there is no airflow in there to carry the steam away, so it settles straight back onto the coating.1 You are not reheating them. You are steaming them.

The quick answer

Skip the microwave for anything meant to be crispy. Use an air fryer at 200°C for 6 to 8 minutes, or an oven at 200°C for 10 to 12 minutes. Flip halfway. Give the pieces space on the tray so hot air reaches every side. Stacked food steams itself soft.

Reheat times at a glance

Every snack on the party plate, and the setting that actually brings the crunch back.

What each snack needs

Nuggets. The breaded shell is the part that goes soft first, so it needs direct, dry heat. They are ready when the coating sounds hollow as you tap it and the centre is steaming hot.4

Seaweed chicken. The seaweed sits inside a delicate crumb coating that burns faster than plain breadcrumb, so the heat runs a touch lower than nuggets. Space the pieces out. Crowding traps steam and turns the coating chewy instead of crisp.

Burger patties. Patties are thicker, so the timing changes to get the middle hot without drying out the outside. Check the middle is no longer pink and the patty is hot all the way through, not just warm on the outside.5

Three mistakes that kill the crisp

  1. Reheating straight from the fridge in a microwave. Steam builds up under the coating and turns it rubbery.
  2. Piling pieces on top of each other. Trapped steam undoes the crunch you are trying to save.
  3. Using too low a temperature for too long. Slow heat dries out the middle before the outside ever crisps.

One tray, three snacks

Cooking nuggets, seaweed chicken and patties together for a party? Put the patties in first since they take longest, add the nuggets and seaweed chicken halfway through, and pull everything at the same time. Check each item is steaming hot in the middle before you serve it. If the party is still being planned, work out how much finger food to buy first.
